Learn French A1
Online

Build a Strong Foundation in French One Week at a Time

If you’re looking for a complete and structured French A1 course online, you’re in the right place. The EF Complete French Course – Level A1 is designed specifically for absolute beginners and early learners who want to build a solid foundation in French, step by step. Whether you’re learning French on your own or supplementing formal classes, this course gives you everything you need to progress with confidence: clear structure, practical content, interactive activities, and real cultural immersion.

A True A1 French Course, Not Just a List of Words and Phrases

Unlike many beginner French programmes that promise fluency in just a few weeks with limited content and little opportunity to practise, this course offers genuine exposure to the French language—with more than 15 weeks of structured material designed to build a solid foundation. Each week includes six learning days, covering listening, reading, grammar, communication, vocabulary, pronunciation, and cultural topics. The aim is not to rush, but to create a lasting base for everything that follows. Learning a language takes time, and it requires both practice and exposure.

What You’ll Learn at the A1 Level

The A1 level of the EF Complete French Course focuses on helping you:

• Understand and use everyday expressions and basic vocabulary
• Introduce yourself and others
• Ask and answer simple questions
• Talk about your routine, preferences, and environment
• Handle common situations in shops, restaurants, and public places
• Build your vocabulary through games and fun activities
• Practise essential French grammar and verb conjugations
• Gain exposure to spoken French, real conversations, and French culture

You’ll be gently guided through the CEFR A1 curriculum, with content tailored to adult learners and self-study.

A Weekly Structure Designed for Real Progress

Each week in the A1 level follows the same consistent, proven structure:

Day 1 + Day 4
Vocabulary

Learn and practise two themed French vocabulary modules per day using the Word Builder. Each module includes:

• A bilingual French-English word list, colour-coded for gender (blue for masculine, red for feminine)
• Audio recordings to hear correct pronunciation
• Four interactive games and exercises to reinforce the vocabulary
• Spaced repetition across the course, with each list reappearing at least twice to help you remember new words long-term

Dozens of topics include greetings, numbers, family, food, places, professions, colours, days, and much more.

Day 2
Listening & Reading
with “Learn French with Anthony” Podcast

Your core material on Day 2 is an episode from the “Learn French with Anthony” podcast, specifically designed for A1 learners. For each episode, you will:

• Listen to the audio and follow along with the full transcript
• Benefit from sentence-by-sentence bilingual explanations
• Practise with four targeted exercises to check understanding and reinforce vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension
• Improve your listening skills and pronunciation by working with authentic, graded content

This regular listening practice helps you train your ear for French from the very beginning.

Day 3
Grammar and Conjugation

On Day 3, you’ll focus on the grammar and conjugation points introduced in the previous day’s podcast episode. Each lesson includes:

• Clear explanations of key A1 grammar structures (present tense, articles, adjectives, negation, simple questions…)
• Bilingual example sentences to show grammar in context
• Interactive activities and games to help you practise in a fun and effective way

Through lots of examples and practice, you’ll start to understand how grammar works in real French—not just in theory. And you’ll learn some vocabulary along the way!

Day 5
Communication

Day 5 is all about practical communication. The A1 communication modules are based on real-life situations and common interactions. Each module includes:

• Audio dialogues or narrated stories set in shops, cafés, public services, and daily situations
• Vocabulary lists and English translations
• Role plays and exercises to help you practise listening, speaking, reading, and writing
•
Everyday phrases and polite expressions to use naturally in conversation

You’ll develop real skills for real situations—whether you’re preparing to travel to France or simply want to speak confidently from the start.

Day 6
Cultural, Reading & Phonetics

On Day 6, you’ll take a broader view of the French language through:

The History of French

Discover how the French language developed through the centuries, in simple French suitable for A1 level learners. This gives cultural context to what you’re learning and connects language with history.

Your First Graded Reader
“Une Nouvelle Vie en France”

Start reading in French with this 20-chapter A1-level graded reader created especially for learners of French. Follow the story of two families—one French, one Belgian—as they meet, learn, and share everyday life in France.

• Parallel bilingual presentation for support
• Simple grammar and common vocabulary
• Audio recordings to improve pronunciation and flow

Introduction to French Phonetics

You’ll also begin to explore the sounds of French and the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), helping you to read pronunciation guides and improve your own accent.

Learn A1 French in Context, Not Just by Memorising

What makes the EF Complete French Course unique is the way it blends language learning and cultural understanding. You’ll not only learn how to say things—you’ll understand why and when to say them. With content rooted in French society, real conversations, and native pronunciation, you’re not just learning a language, you’re learning to think and communicate like a French speaker.

Your Path to the Next Level Starts Here

By the end of the A1 level, you’ll have a solid foundation in French and the skills to move confidently to the A2 level. You’ll know how to:

• Communicate in everyday situations
• Understand basic spoken and written French
• Express yourself with correct pronunciation and sentence structure
• Start recognising patterns and reusing familiar words and expressions

The EF Complete French Course – Level A1 is your first step on the path to independent, confident French communication. Start here, and build the fluency you need—week after week, level after level.
